Physioballs are used to develop a child's gross motor skills. They have become extremely popular exercise tools for people of all ages and stages. Here is an idea to use with this popular training tool. Try sitting the child cross-legged on a ball. Hold their hips firmly, and slowly roll the ball from the center out in the forward directions on a gentle angle. Watch to see how (and if) the child compensates for the new angle of their trunk. We want to see the chin tip back towards level with the floor. This signifies the understanding that "upright" is not always determined by the position of the hips relative to the floor, but rather is cued by the relation of the inner ears to the floor. Prompt the child to "sit up straight" both with verbal and demonstrative cues. Once the rolling forward is mastered, work on backwards, side-to-side, and in a gentle circular motion. The 24 inch (70 cm.) ball is usually best for children the size of a typical child of 4 - 8 years. 19 inch (50 cm.) and 35 inch (90 cm.) versions are also available.

Accessible even to a baby or to a child with very solid fine motor delay. The strong sight and sound effect means a blind OR deaf child can also enjoy this toy. Encourage children to try pushing with both hands and any other parts of the body that they are developing control over. The top can be glued to a board if necessary to keep it on a tray.
