Beautiful poetry by a gifted 13 year old with learning disabilities

Reach for the Moon, a book of beautiful poetry and breathtaking art, reflects thirteen-year-old Samantha Abeel's remarkable journey of growth and self-discovery. Samantha is learning disabled. She does not understand mathematical concepts and has difficulty with simple tasks such as telling time or making change. By the seventh grade, after years of frustration, she had become increasingly anxious and withdrawn. Failure in school might have become failure in life, but for two perceptive women. Samantha's mother and a caring teacher helped her discover that her talent in writing was even more remarkable than her lack of ability to comprehend numbers. They encouraged Samantha to respond in poetry to the beautiful paintings of renowned artist and family friend, Charles R. Murphy. This book, filled with touching and inspiring poems, is the result. It will encourage everyone who has ever confronted their own limits and feared that they would never succeed. Reach for the Moon concludes with brief essays about Samantha' s journey written by her mother and by her teacher. their observations offer guidance and support for all parents and teachers who are challenged by children with learning disabilities. Every parent and teacher who works with the gifted and the learning disabled should know and use this book to celebrate what Samantha has accomplished and to inspire others to do the same. 48 pages, 9 1/2" X 10 1/4"
