Bobby Is On The Beat, Checking The Web For Accessible Design!
By: Renata Bursten, Dragonfly Staff

Bobby is a web-based tool that analyzes web pages for their accessibility to people with disabilities. Anyone who has a website can now check their sites to make sure that everyone has access.

Bobby grew out of CAST's underlying mission, which is to expand opportunities for people with disabilities through the innovative uses of computer technology. In planning its own Web site, CAST researchers wrestled with the idea of how to make the entire Web more universally designed, i.e., more accessible and useful to all people, including those with disabilities.
,In exploring this concept, CAST developed the idea of a helpful detective -- a Web-based entity that would expose barriers, encourage compliance with existing guidelines and teach Web masters about accessibility. Bobby was born.
,The downloadable application was released to meet the needs of developers who wanted to test pages before posting to the Web or, behind a firewall, and internal Intranet documents within large corporations, government agencies, and educational institutions.

Assentive Communication Introduction

Clock Communicators are "Low-Tech" augmentative communication devices, meaning you don't need a computer or software to make them work. They are an excellent way to introduce communication and making choices to new switch-users. When starting to work with your child, try taking pictures of the real choices that you want your child to indicate. It also helps to start with pictures and real objects presented. i.e.. Glass of milk on one side, OR banana on the other. Work up from two choices to as many as twelve. Try: pictures of bed, bath, outside, toys, video, food, drink, family members etc.
